The Fifth and Sixth Amendments to the United States Consitution provides that every person is entitled to the assistance of counsel in a criminal case.  The problem is that many people who have been charged with a crime and are being held in custody don't exercise their right to counsel.  They want out of jail so badly that they are willing to make a deal with the prosecution even if it results in a conviction.  These convictions can have serious consequences.  Don't make a decision that could affect the rest of your life without speaking to an attorney first.

In every criminal case you should be asked by the judge if you would like an attorney to represent you in court.  Your answer should always be yes.  If you cannot afford to hire an attorney the judge will appoint someone to represent you.  Many of these attorneys have significant experience and can help you make sure that the charges against you are valid.  Even if you know you committed the offense your attorney may be able to find a procedural or evidentiary issue that will help you.  Your attorney will also know the prosecutor and will be able to help you make a deal.

Even if your goal is to be let out of jail as soon as possible, you are better off with an attorney.  The attorney can make a deal for you if he is unable to find any issue with your case.  Either way, asking for an attorney will help you avoid unwarranted criminal convictions on your record.
